Career Guidance Session on Opportunities in the Merchant Navy

Nagarjuna Training Institute (NTI) organized an interactive career guidance session on 4 July 2026 for the students of the 23rd Batch of the Residential Training Programme. The session aimed to introduce students to career opportunities in the Merchant Navy and provide practical information about educational pathways, professional requirements, and employment prospects in the maritime sector.

The session was conducted by Mr. Sagar Gawai, Founder and Managing Director of SG Marine Drives Private Limited, who shared insights from his extensive professional experience in the maritime industry.

The programme began with a welcome and introduction of the guest speaker by Mr. Bhanu Pratap, Academic Director of Nagarjuna Training Institute, who highlighted Mr. Gawai’s professional achievements and contributions to mentoring young people exploring career opportunities.

During the session, Mr. Gawai provided an overview of the Merchant Navy and explained its major operational areas, including the Deck, Engine, and Catering Departments. He outlined the educational qualifications, training programmes, entrance requirements, and certification processes required for various career paths within the maritime sector.

The speaker also discussed the professional responsibilities and working environment associated with a maritime career. Students were introduced to both the opportunities and challenges of working at sea, enabling them to gain a balanced understanding of the profession. Topics covered included career growth, international exposure, financial independence, technical skill development, and the importance of adaptability, discipline, and teamwork.

A significant part of the session was dedicated to an interactive question-and-answer segment, during which students sought clarification on career options, training institutions, eligibility criteria, and life aboard merchant vessels. The discussion encouraged active participation and provided students with practical guidance for future career planning.

Drawing from his personal journey, Mr. Gawai shared experiences from his educational and professional development, emphasizing perseverance, continuous learning, and commitment to one’s goals. He encouraged students to explore career opportunities with confidence and highlighted the importance of informed decision-making when choosing a professional path.

The session concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Ms. Renuka, who expressed appreciation to Mr. Gawai for sharing his expertise and valuable insights with the students. The programme ended with a group photograph, marking the successful completion of an informative and engaging career guidance session.
